WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW By Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz 32nd Senatorial District, Bronx County, New York
OBAMA “EVOLVING OR REVOLVING?”
Abraham Lincoln was the American President who freed the slaves in the United States of America.
This action caused people to name President Lincoln the “First Slave President of the nation."
Then President Bill Clinton was named the "First Black President" because of his position and aid to the African-American community during his administration.
Now, the world known, "Newsweek Magazine" on its front cover this week declares President Barack Obama as the "First Gay President”.
It is not that Barack Obama is gay, but because of his position in favor of marriage between homosexuals, and for being the first President who professes to favor marriage between men with men and women with women, Newsweek Magazine has declared him "The first gay President."
You should know that we do not know how much damage this will cause for the re-election of President Barack Obama, who made history as the nation’s first and authentic African-American President.
You should also know that this is not the first time that Obama has declared himself in favor of gay marriage.
In 1996 Barack Obama ran as a State Senator in a liberal district in Illinois. On that occasion Barack Obama declared himself in favor of gay marriage and condemned people who were opposed to gay marriage.
Then in 2004, Barack Obama ran for United States Senator and realized that he would be representing the entire State. He did an about face and spoke out against gay marriage but in favor of Civil Unions.
In 2008 Barack Obama became a candidate for the Presidency of the United States and took a step back and professed himself against gay marriage and pronounced that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
Now in 2012 as President of the Nation, Barack Obama faces a tough re-election campaign. The opposing candidate Mitt Romney has declared himself against gay marriage and now one more time Barack Obama changes his mind and says that his position has "evolved". Stating that he is in favor of marriage between men with men and women with women.
With the title of the "First Gay President" which Newsweek Magazine has given him, we do not know if this will help or hurt President Obama’s chances of being re-elected, but one thing we can say it has become difficult for the President, when according to the polls, the African-American community in this nation are still opposed to gay marriage by 55% of the population.
I think that although President Obama said that his position has "evolved", it is clear that by going gone back and forth on this issue since 1996, we have to call it “revolving not evolving.”
I am afraid that this revolving situation will hurt the President even among the African-American community.
I am Senator Ruben Diaz, and this is what you should know.
